More than 35 Years in the Electrical Power Industry

Unmatched Expertise for Power Quality and Reliability Check-ups and Enhancements

A Proven Track Record of Power Reliability Check-ups and Enhancement for Customers with Critical Power Needs

Keeping Patients and Medical Staff Safe

Hong Kong Baptist Hospital is one of the city’s leading private hospitals. Founded in 1963, it has more than 2,200 medical employees and 860 beds, a 24-hour outpatient clinic, and a range of specialist clinics.

A reliable electricity supply is essential for a hospital. Any interruption or loss of power is more than just an inconvenience. It can interrupt the hospital’s operations and has an impact on life-saving treatment. To achieve optimal reliability and safety for employees and patients, therefore, regular and comprehensive power quality check-ups and analysis are vital.

With more than 35 years of experience in the electricity industry, CLPe provides end-to-end consulting and engineering services for the power needs of healthcare customers. Because of the critical nature of healthcare facilities and the increasing dependence on electrical equipment for the preservation of life, there are special requirements for the design of hospital power systems. CLPe experts have a through grounding in specialist knowledge and experience to ensure healthcare facilities are reliably powered.

In 2013 and 2019, CLPe was appointed by the Hong Kong Baptist Hospital to conduct a comprehensive power reliability check-up and enhancement for a total of 5 blocks of the hospital. The project included a study of the existing electrical power systems, including a review of supply and back-up supply arrangements, along with a review of equipment system fault levels and the breaking capacity of protective devices. CLPe then drew up a list of recommendations for improvements and an estimate of the costs involved.

Challenges and Solutions

  • Minimising the Impact on Hospital Operations

Hospitals provide round-the-clock services, and the complexity of the diagnostic and treatment equipment in today’s hospitals make them heavily reliant on electricity. Electric power supply reliability is a top priority and cannot be compromised for any reason. Any impact on hospital operations by improvement works, therefore, must be kept to an absolute minimum.

  • Complex Electrical Systems

Electrical systems in hospitals are more complex than those in other buildings. To ensure the reliability of power systems, hospitals commonly use parallel systems with back-ups and have automatic transfer switches between the systems, as well as multiple branches to separate loads by type. There are also new technologies to provide different arrangements for parallel systems. CLPe has extensive experience and is familiar with the different kind of systems, making it able to handle these sophisticated scenarios.

  • Stakeholder Coordination

There are many different stakeholders in hospitals, including employees, patients, visitors, and other contractors. It is important to consider every stakeholder affected by a project and to integrate their needs and get them to agree on the same solutions. Good stakeholder coordination not only helps bring success to a project but also ultimately ensures the safety and quality of the results.
